Not only was the subject matter relevant but the quality of the speakers and their content was, in my opinion, of a very high standard. This year’s conference also saw input from colleagues from each of the home nations which allowed delegates to get a feel for the differences that exist. Despite these differences the messages remain the same, less funding and greater levels of achievement being expected. The contributions also highlighted the focus on 14 – 19 learners and less support for adults.
Delegates were concerned about a number of issues with the removal of access some qualifications by Summitt Skills being top of the agenda. These concerns were raised by BACH when we met Keith Marshall in March this year. What was evident is that the Sector Skills Agreements were endorsed by College Principals via the AoC. It was agreed that BACH will write to all Principals in Colleges where Construction is offered and ask them to consult with you before they endorse any agreement with Summitt and Construction Skills.
This year’s conference tried to address the issues raised by delegates at last year’s event and in order to build on this process please let Regional Chairs have your views on what you would like to see on the Conference Programme.
Delegates were once again entertained by Students from ‘The Oldham College’ who were once again an excellent example of the good work taking place in our colleges. The tables were decorated with flowers arranged with a construction theme by students from Stockport College. Yet another example of the excellent work we do in FE.
In addition to awarding honorary membership to three members I also had the pleasure of recording BACH’s appreciation to Mike Drake. Mike decided to stand down from his role as Business Manager after many successful years’ in the role. BACH gave him a painting of ‘Sea the Stars’ winning the Derby by a Student from Wirral Met College.
Conference gave members the opportunity to meet Paul Monroe our new Business Manager and Debbie Nonnemacher our Administrative Officer. It is an exciting time for the Association and with two excellent individuals supporting our work then benefits to you the members should become increasingly evident.
On the 12 May 2010 the NEC will be holding an away day to take an in depth look at the future content of the development plan. The core question to be considered will be what value the Association gives to you the member. The outcomes will form the basis of a draft document which will be circulated to you for comment. The adoption of the new plan will need to be agreed at the Autumn Conference and AGM.
